Centrica signs shale gas deal to supply 1.8m homes for 20 years

Yesterday Centrica hailed a landmark £10billion US gas deal to power 1.8 million British homes and ease concerns over dwindling supplies.

The British Gas owner said the 20–year agreement with US operator Cheniere Energy Partners, which could be extended for a further 10 years, would see it import 89 billion cubic feet of liquefied natural gas (LNG) each year to the Isle of Grain in Kent with the first shipment expected to begin in September 2018.

Although Centrica said the deal, which is still subject to US regulatory approval, gave it the freedom to export the gas to any part of the world, it stressed its first priority would be serving its 16 million customers in the UK.
